Databases

Funding

Funding for selected EBSCOhost databases in academic and school libraries was provided by the Governor of West Virginia and theWest Virginia Legislature in response to a request by the West Virginia Library Commission and includes the following: MasterFILE Premier; Alt Health Watch, Business Source Elite, Health Source Consumer Edition, Health Source Nursing Academic Edition, Newspaper Source, Primary Source.

Alexander Street Press Titles, ArtStor, the Digital Library of Appalachia, Encyclopedia of Life Sciences, Gale Virtual Library, Oxford Art Online, Oxford Music Online, JStor, Nantahala Review, EBSCO E-Books, Polling the Nations, and Statesman's Yearbook have been obtained through the University of Charleston's affiliation with the Appalachian College Association and the ACA Central Library.

Alphabetical List of Databases

Use these resources to look for articles by topic. Many of these resources will provide information in specific fields or disciplines, e.g., CINAHL for nursing and health science students.
If you are unsure of which resource to use, a good place to begin is with general resources like Academic Search Complete or MasterFILE Complete. These are both multi-disciplinary resources containing mostly full-text resources (articles, book chapters, etc.).
When accessing these resources from off campus you will be queried for your username and library barcode number. Your username should be writthe First Last with a space betweenyour first and last names (or if you are using one of the group barcodes you will enter the class code here). The library barcode number (either your personal one or the on associated with your group) should be entered under barcode. ABI/INFORM Collection
ABI/INFORM Collection is an extensive business database that includes not only aggregated journal articles but Industry and Market Research, Commodity, Country, and Company Reports, Business Thesis and Dissertations, and much more.
Academic Search Ultimate
This database provides access to more than 13,500 full-text journals covering all branches of scholarly knowledge.
Access Medicine
AccessMedicineÂ® from McGraw-Hill is an innovative online resource that provides students, residents, clinicians, researchers, and all health professionals with access to more than 65 medical titles from the best minds in medicine, updated content, thousands of images and illustrations, interactive self-assessment, case files, time-saving diagnostic and point-of-care tools, a comprehensive search platform, and the ability to view from and download content to a mobile device.
AGRICOLA
Provides access to a large collection of journal articles and reports indexed by the National Agriculture Library along with links to some full text.
Alt HealthWatch
Provides access to the full-text of over 140 publications on complementary, holistic, and integrated approaches to health care and wellness.
American Chemical Society Journals
Provides access to the full-text of the journals published by the American Chemical Society.

American Civil War: Letters & Diaries
The e-book collection, American Civil War: Letters and Diaries contains 2,009 authors and approximately 100,000 pages of diaries, letters and memoirs.
Anatomy TV
Anatomy.tv is a suite of 3D interactive models of human anatomy. Intuitive controls allow the user to zoom, rotate and peel away layers to educate and communicate with an ease and directness that was never possible with print. A wealth of supporting media, MRIs, X-rays, live-action movies and animations are also included to supplement Anatomy.tv's high resolution, computer-generated models.
ARTStor
ARTStor provides access to over 300,000 digital images and their associated catalog data. The images represent the full scope of the history of art.
Biography Reference Center
Biography Reference Centerâ„¢ offers a comprehensive collection of more than 461,000 full-text biographies, including the complete full-text run of Biography Today and Biography, as well as thousands of narrative biographies that are not available in other databases.
Business Source Ultimate
Business Source Ultimate is a comprehensive business database providing access to an enormous collection of books, case studies, company profiles, industry reports, SWOT analyses, trade journals and academic business journals.

ChemSpider: The Free Chemical Database
ChemSpider is a free chemical structure database providing fast text and structure search access to over 28 million structures from hundreds of data sources. Produced by the Royal Society of Chemistry.
Child Care & Early Education Research Connections
Multidisciplinary database of articles, reports, government documents and datasets relevant to child care and early education research and policy.
Chronicle of Higher Education
The Chronicle of Higher Education Web site provides access to the complete contents of the latest issue; daily news and advice columns; current job listings; articles published since September 1989; discussion forums; and career-building tools.
CINAHL Complete (Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature)
CINAHL Complete provides access to the full text of more than 1350 nursing journals and abstracts and bibliographic data for over 5,300 current nursing and allied health journals and publications from 1982 to the present.
Cochrane Central Registry of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL)
The Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) includes details of published articles taken from bibliographic databases (notably MEDLINE and EMBASE), and other published and unpublished sources. CENTRAL records include the title of the article, information on where it was published (bibliographic details) and, in many cases, a summary of the article. They do not contain the full text of the article.
Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews (CDSR)
The Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews (CDSR) is the leading resource for systematic reviews in health care.

The CDSR includes all Cochrane Reviews (and protocols) prepared by Cochrane Review Groups in The Cochrane Collaboration. Each Cochrane Review is a peer-reviewed systematic review that has been prepared and supervised by a Cochrane Review Group (editorial team) in The Cochrane Collaboration according to the Cochrane Handbook for Systematic Reviews of Interventions or Cochrane Handbook for Diagnostic Test Accuracy Reviews.
Cochrane Methodology Register (CMR)
The Cochrane Methodology Register (CMR)* is a bibliography of publications that report on methods used in the conduct of controlled trials. It includes journal articles, books, and conference proceedings, and the content is sourced from MEDLINE and hand searches. CMR contains studies of methods used in reviews and more general methodological studies that could be relevant to anyone preparing systematic reviews. CMR records contain the title of the article, information on where it was published (bibliographic details), and, in some cases, a summary of the article. They do not contain the full text of the article.
Database Abstracts of Reviews of Effects (DARE)
The Database of Abstracts of Reviews of Effects (DARE) is the only database to contain abstracts of systematic reviews that have been quality-assessed. Each abstract includes a summary of the review together with a critical commentary about the overall quality.

DARE is a key resource for busy decision-makers and can be used for answering questions about the effects of specific interventions, whether such questions arise from practice or when making policy. DARE covers a broad range of health related interventions and thousands of abstracts of reviews in fields as diverse as diagnostic tests, public health, health promotion, pharmacology, surgery, psychology, and the organization and delivery of health care.

DARE complements the CDSR by quality-assessing and summarizing reviews that have not yet been carried out by The Cochrane Collaboration.
Digital Library of Appalachia
The Digital Library of Appalachia provides online access to archival and historical materials related to the culture of the southern and central Appalachian region. The contents of the DLA are drawn from special collections of Appalachian College Association member libraries.
Early American Imprints, Series I: Evans, 1639-1800
Early American Imprints, Series I: Evans, 1639-1800 is the definitive resource for information about every aspect of life in 17th- and 18th-century America, from agriculture and auctions through foreign affairs, diplomacy, literature, music, religion, the Revolutionary War, temperance, witchcraft, and just about any other topic imaginable.

Early American Imprints, Series I: Evans, 1639-1800 consists of more than 37,000 books, pamphlets and broadsides.
Early Encounters in North America
The e-book collection, Early Encounters in North America contains 1,482 authors and over 100,000 pages of letters, diaries, memoirs and accounts of early encounters between indigenous American peoples and European settlers.
EBSCO E-Books
EBSCO E-Books provides the UC community access to over 70,000 current electronic books. Seats may be limited so it is best to contact a librarian before assigning a reading to a class from one of these titles. This collection was formerly known as NetLibrary.
EBSCO E-Books Academic Collection
This collection contains over 80,000 books concerned with a vast number of academic disciplines. Seats for these particular titles are unlimited, which means that an unlimited number of users may view these titles at the same time.
Education Research Complete
Education Research Complete provides full text for over 750 journals dealing with educational topics from early childhood to higher education.
ERIC (Educational Resource Information Center)
ERIC, the Educational Resource Information Center , provides access to over 2,200 educational digests and provides abstracts and bibliographic data for nearly 1,000 education and education related journals as well as the ERIC microfiche collection.
Films on Demand
This resource provides access to thousands of documentary films across a broad range of disciplines.
Funk & Wagnall's New World Encyclopedia
Funk & Wagnalls New World Encyclopedia database indexes over 25,000 records, covering an array of topics. Full text for each record may be easily accessed by double clicking on the topic from the display.
Gale Virtual Reference Library
Provides access to a large number of reference titles in full text.
Health Source: Consumer Edition
Provides access to the full-text of nearly 300 journals in the areas of medical sciences, food sciences and nutrition, child care, sports medicine, and general health.
Health Source: Nursing/Academic
Provides access to the full-text of nearly 550 full text medical journals. Over 800 other journals are abstracted.
Health Technology Assessments (HTA)
The Health Technology Assessment (HTA) Database brings together details of completed and ongoing health technology assessments (studies of the medical, social, ethical, and economic implications of healthcare interventions) from around the world. The aim of the HTA Database is to improve the quality and cost-effectiveness of health care.

The HTA database is produced by the Centre for Reviews and Dissemination (CRD) at the University of York, UK, using information obtained from members of International Network of Agencies for Health Technology Assessment (INAHTA) and other health technology assessment organizations.
Johns Hopkins Guide to Literary Theory & Criticism
Constantly updated version of the Johns Hopkins Guide to Literary Theory & Criticism.
Journal of the Royal Society
Search the publications of the Royal Society of England, one of the world's oldest scientific societies.
JSTOR
JSTOR provides extensive full-text articles in a variety of fields including history, political science, business, economics, literature, and environmental science.
LexisNexis Academic
LexisNexis Academic provides access to a variety of legal, business, and news resources.
Library Information Science & Technology Abstracts with Full Text
LISTA provides indexing and selected full text for over 600 periodicals dealing with librarianship and information science.
Library Literature & Information Science Full Text
This database provides the full text of over 150 library science journals.
Literary Reference Center
This database provides a variety of information on literary authors and their works. References include reference works, monographs, anthologies, literary, and academic journals.
Mango Languages
Mango Basic provides a quick introduction to a language and culture through the acquisition of simple conversational skills. Mango Complete is a more in-depth program that still focuses on practical conversations, but is designed to also increase vocabulary and grammar skills. Neither product is intended to deliver total fluency, but rather conversational proficiency.
MasterFILE Complete
Provides full-text for over 2,000 general reference publications. MasterFILE Complete also includes nearly 1,000 full-text reference books, maps, flags, short biographies, over 107,000 primary source documents, and over 590,000 photographs.
Medline
MEDLINEÂ® is the United States National Library of Medicine's (NLMÂ®) premier bibliographic database providing information from the following fields: medicine, nursing, dentistry, veterinary medicine, allied health and pre-clinical sciences.
Medline Complete (EBSCO)
Medline complete contains the full-text for more than 2,100 journals covering the areas of medicine, nursing, and pharmacy.
Micromedex
Provides evidence based information about drugs, toxicology, diseases, acute care, and alternative medicine needed to make informed clinical diagnosis and treatment decisions.
Nantahala Review
Online journal of writing and photography from Appalachia.
Nature Encyclopedia of Life Sciences
Constantly updated and revised version of the print encyclopedia.
Newspaper Source
Provides access to the selected full-text of 25 national and international and over 200 regional newspapers as well as television and radio transcripts.
NHS Economic Evaluation Database (EED)
NHS EED (NHS Economic Evaluation Database) focuses primarily on the economic evaluation of health care interventions and aims to help decision makers interpret an increasingly complex and technical literature.

Economic evaluations are studies in which a comparison of two or more interventions or care alternatives is undertaken and in which both the costs and outcomes of the alternatives are examined. This includes cost-benefit analyses, cost-utility analyses, and cost-effectiveness analyses.
North American Women's Letters and Diaries
The e-book collection, North American Women's Letters and Diaries includes the immediate experiences of 1,325 women and 150,000 pages of diaries and letters from Colonial Times to 1950.
Open Access Theses and Dissertations
OATD is a discovery service intended to improve our ability to put researchers and scholars in touch with the valuable and unique OA content in our ETD collections. It works with each site's metadata to index only records that are actually ETDs and are freely available online.
Oxford Art Online
Provides web access to the 34 volume Dictionary of Art (1996) as well as numerous annual updates. Covers the visual arts from prehistory until the present.
Oxford Music Online
Provides web access to the full text of the New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians , 2nd edition (2001), the New Grove Dictionary of Opera (1992), and the New Grove Dictionary of Jazz (2002) as well as numerous updated articles.
Oxford Reference Online
Oxford Reference Online provides access to over two hundred up to date reference works containing over two million entries covering a wide range of subjects.
Points of View Reference Center
Points of View Reference Center provides full-text content pertaining to hundreds of topics, each with an overview (objective background/description), point (affirmative argument) and counterpoint (opposing argument).
Polling the Nations
Polling the Nations provides access to thousands of opinion polls by Gallup and other sources arranged by subject.
Primary Search
Primary Search is designed for elementary school libraries and public library children's rooms. It contains full text for more than 60 popular, elementary school magazines. All full text articles are assigned a reading level indicator (Lexiles).
Project Muse E-Books
This collections provides access to over 33,000 books from scholarly and university presses. These works cover a wide range of subjects primarily within the humanities and social sciences.
ProQuest Dissertations & Theses Database
PQDT provides nearly 3 million searchable citations to dissertation and theses from around the world from 1743 to the present day together with over 1 million full-text dissertations that are available for download in PDF format.
PsycArticles
Provides the full-text of articles from 49 journals published by the American Psychological Association and allied organizations.
Psychology and Behavioral Sciences Collection
Provides full-text access to over 500 scholarly journals in emotional and behavioral characteristics, psychology, anthropology and related fields.
PsycINFO
PsycINFO contains nearly 2.3 million citations and summaries of journal articles, book chapters, books, dissertations and technical reports, all in the field of psychology. Journal coverage, which spans from 1887 to present, includes international material selected from over 2,000 periodicals in over 25 languages. More than 60,000 records are added each year. It also includes information about the psychological aspects of related disciplines such as medicine, psychiatry, physiology, pharmacology, sociology, education, nursing, linguistics, anthropology, business and law.
PubMed
PubMed is a service of the National Library of Medicine and includes over 15 million citations for biomedical articles back to the 1950s. PubMed also includes links to many sites providing full-text articles and other related resources.
R2 Library
Provides access to the Health Sciences eBook collection.
Regional Business News
Provides full-text access to 75 regional business journals, newspapers, and news wires.
Sage Management & Organizational Studies Collection
The Sage Management and Organizational Studies Collection contains the full text of sixty-five (65) peer reviewed journals and will be of especial use for students in business and leadership studies.
Science Direct
The Science Direct College Edition - Health and Life Sciences Collection provides access to the full-text of over 950 scientific journals.
Science Reference Center
This database provides a wide variety of full-text science periodicals, reference books, encyclopedias, images and videos. resources are included that deal with state and national curriculum standards.
Scirus-for Scientific Information Only
This database searches the web for scientific, scholarly, technical and medical data on the Web while filtering out non-scientific web sites.

This database links to materials outside of the library.
Searchasaurus
Searchasaurus provides an interface designed specifically for the young researcher that links to the materials contained in the EBSCO Primary Search database. This database is useful for education majors.
SportDiscus with Full Text
SPORTDiscus provides access to fulltext and bibliographic references in such areas as sport medicine, physical education, coaching and training, arts and history, corporate wellness, engineering and health and safety.
Statesman's Yearbook of the World
SYBWorld provides political, economic, and social information about countries and regions as well as information on international organizations.
TestMaster
Use TestMaster to iprove your study habits and test-taking skills.
